November 30th / 31st

Nov 30th
This is our favorite BBQ place. Chicken or fish and rice is served fresh every day. Dinner is only $1 for each of us. Went into town again, to try the ATM, but this time the machine was out of money. Now we are down to our last few dollars, and we haven't paid for our hut for 2 days. We are starting to be a bit concerned as this is the only ATM on the island. Had rice for lunch and dinner (5cents), to make sure we had enough cash to get into town tomorrow. Thank goodness we had plentyof snacks, so we have been piggy out on chips and cookies. Spent the afternoon on the beach, can't believe it's empty! This must be the pre season, but the weather is great and it's like having our own private beach.

This is the taxi rank at Bantayan Town. People are crammed inside these tiny motorcyle cabbies and the shopping goes on top.

Sunset along our strip of beach.

Got to get to town and see if the ATM is up and running. When we arrived the line was around the building, but at least it was dispensing cash! We waited 1 hr before we got our turn.

Derek at the ATM. There are 2 armed guards outside the bank, and one inside the door. High Security!! Made us a bit nervous, so we got our cash and quickly put it away. There's a reason they have guards with rifles!! At last we can pay the resort, they have been very patient.

This is us, jammed inside one of the taxi's. It's very hot and cramped but you have to experience the ride.

On the way back from town, we passed this school, which says "Child friendly School" hate to think what the others are like.

Spent the afternoon relaxing, feeling better now that we have some money for dinner etc... Still can't believe that we are the only people on this beach. The local kids wash /swim in the morning and the evenings bring more people to the beach, but during the day it's like our own private beach!

View along the other side of the beach. Apart from the fishing boats heading out in the morning it's very quite.
Surprised at how popular Karaoke is here, there are about 12 shops along the main road, and 2 of them are Karaoke cafes. People come in for coffee and a sing song!! It's busy till 10pm. All the songs are in english and young and old find it entertaining.
Thought the old lady and young kid at the BBQ were staff, but it seems that they clear the tables so that they can eat the leftovers! All the drink left over gets poured into a large bottle, and is consumed by all the staff. There definately is poverty here, but I must admit that I've never seen happier people. Everyone seems content, and sings alot!
