March 12th

Had a good BBQ dinner, even though the restaurant was almost flooded due to the high tide. Plastic chairs kept sinking into the sand, so when a strong current came in, most people ended up with wet bottoms!!
Kitchen stand on the beach, being splashed about.
People were quite amused by the whole thing.
Went back to our resort restaurant and watched "Up" movie. ( movies every night). During the movie, people noticed a fire . One of the cabins in the run down resort next to ours was on fire! Owner stood and watched, when asked if he was going to do anything , he said he's called the fire services and they would be out in the morning! No services of any kind on the island! Few locals ran up, but nobody seemed too concerned. Surprising, as all the cabins are made out of wood and constructed very close to each other.
In the morning, we walked over to see the burnt cabins ( maybe 50 yards!) You can actually see some of our resort cabins in the background! Spoke to one couple who had this cabin for the night, they said 3 cabins caught on fire, and everyone lost everything! Fire was contained to the cabins and didn't spread to the next units, as the jungle floor was damp from rain during the day. Not sure what caused the fire, but most likely it was faulty wiring, which is rampant here!
Did ask the couple if they needed money etc.. but they said they had friends here so they're alright. Never considered what happens in an emergency, apparently you're on your own!! They got a police report from the fire servicemen and the use of a phone, that's all. Now they have to get to K.L. to get new passports, as do all the others.
Most of the day was spent watching the stormy weather !
